Lets talk about contraception - The injection

nurse holding a syringe

Unless you want to end up on 15 kids and counting or you're a bit of a minx living on the wild side you're going to want to be on some sort of contraception. I've tried my fair share. The implant, the pill (more than one type) and currently on the injection which I have been using for a year. However, once my 3 months are up I will be coming off and trying something new. I've had bad side effects with all three but I'll explain why I personally feel like the injection is the worst one so far.

The injection is a contraception that you inject in your bum and lasts for 3 months. If you would like a more detailed explanation of the injection you can find out here.

I'll start off with my pros.

I didn't have to worry about being protected for 3 months.
One of the reasons why the pill never worked for me was because I always forgot to take it. I could go 2 - 3 days without taking it. I was messing my body up basically.

I didn't feel sick while on it.
Another reason why the pill never worked for me. My body hated it. I would take it in the morning and my stomach would be in the worst pain ever that majority of the time I would throw it up.

Now for the cons...

I gained weight, fast
In a year I gained a stone and a half. That might not sound a lot to some but for me it was becoming an issue. And my body couldn't keep up with the weight gain either because I now have stretch marks on my legs. This is the main reason why I wanted to come off it. My diet hasn't changed. I'm not eating junk food all the time and tbh I would say I'm actually eating healthier than I ever have. So why this constant weight gain to the point I'm getting stretch marks?! The doctor did say one of the side effects was weight gain and people can gain up to a stone in 3 years. 3 YEARS!!! I'VE GAINED OVER THAT IN A YEAR! I'm not risking what I will look like in 3 years.

My self confidence has plummeted.
This is probably due to the weight gain but I have never felt this shit in my life. I used to be over confident. Cocky some people may say. Nowadays I'm forever comparing myself to 'instagram girls'. Surgery has even popped into my mind. Boob job, fillers in the lips, liposuction, liposculpture. I was never this person even when I was going through some bad times. Na ah I don't want to feel like this no more.

I was bleeding for one month straight.
Imagine bleeding for 1 month constantly? That is what I was experiencing. I would be fine for the first 2 months and then BAM 1 months of hormones everywhere, constant paying out for tampons and well not that much fun for the boyfriend either. It was better than the implant however where I bled for a whole year. Yep you read that correctly. 365 days of bleeding,

I'm starting to believe I'm meant to be one of those people that have 15 kids as clearly contraception doesn't like me. I know you are probably thinking 'Jas why don't you just use condoms and stop putting your body through this stress?' That is a very good questions to ask and one that I have thought about that my boyfriend would be happy to do. But, that means I give all control to him regarding pregnancy. And me being the control freak I am doesn't like it. It's my body and I want to make sure that I'm protected.

Lets see how the patch goes which is the next contraception I'm going to try. Have you been on the patch before? Please let me know how you got on.

(Since I wrote this post I have actually started the patch. So far I'm feeling sick, mood swings are going out of control and I'm getting headaches. All common side effects that should stop after a few months. This is going to be a loooong few months).

    1. Contraception does affect everyone differently. Try the patch hun. Admitting the first week was bad with mood swings and sickness however I've been on it for a month now and I feel fine. Maybe something to look into? xx

  2. This is a really interesting post! I have never tried the injection before but glad I read this as I will now definitely give this a miss. Luckily my body is OK with the pill but I always forget to take it which is super annoying. Let us know how you get on with the patch.

    1. You need to set a reminder on your phone so you don't forget to take the pill lol. Patch is working ok so far. I feel slightly sick when I first put it on but it's gone the next day. Fingers crossed this one works! xxx

  3. I'm on the injection I've been on it for nearly 3 years and I lost 6 pounds on it, I think it really effects people differently but I'm so happy on it I wouldn't change it for anything. I think you just need to find out what the best thing for you is xxx

  4. I'm always interested to read other people's experiences. I've been on it a year and a half and have loved that it has stopped my periods. I went on it after I had my son and I'm still a stone or two heavier than I was pre-pregnancy. Perhaps it isn't helping? I'll definitely mention it at my next appointment.
