Teenage Reads

While spring cleaning my room I found a bunch of books that I used to read when I was about 15/16. I thought I would re read these and pretty much go back down memory lane. I didn't want to add the obvious books that I think every child has read, Harry Potter I'm looking at you, so I added ones that I thought may be less known to you.

The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart

15 year old Ruby Oliver started to see a shrink because she was having panic attacks. The reasons for these were because in the past 10 days she went from popular(ish) to leaper to slut and leaper. Her shrink has told her to make a list of all the boys she has a history with, regardless how insignificant she thinks they are.

This was my favourite book of all time. Honestly, I read it about 100 times. I think the reason why I enjoyed it to much was because I could relate to Ruby at certain parts of the book but also you would believe a 15 year old had written the book. How they spoke and the reactions to situations is exactly how it is at school. Well it was at my school anyways. Would recommend.

While looking for the link I found a follow on from this book!! I can't wait to read it and find out what has happened to Ruby since.

My Desperate Love Diary (Kelly Ann's Diary) by Liz Rettig

15 year old Kelly Ann is in love with G. Everyone but her can see what an idiot he is. We follow her diary as she attempts to become G's girlfriend while everyone else can see who she really should be with.

I know teenage me loved this book but 22 year old me got frustrated with Kelly Ann. How she could be so blind by what a dick G was but then again I know 15 year old me was exactly the same! I did think some of the diary posts were a bit pointless but most of the book had me reminiscing when I was that age and how I acted like Kelly Ann at times. I think for early/mid teens this would be a good read.

My Now or Never Diary by Liz Rettig

I don't want to make any spoilers to the previous book by writing a description of this one.

I prefer this one to the previous. Mostly because I could relate to it more. The book is filled with sex and house parties. No it's not like 50 Shades of Grey, more about the worry of Kelly Ann wanting to lose her V card. Kelly Ann reacted just how I would throughout the book. This one is a lot more funnier and I felt I was more engaged. Now I want to know what else happens to her. Why didn't young me buy all the sequels to these books!

Diary of a Chav - Trainers v. Tiaras by Grace Dent

Shirz is 15 living in Essex and goes to to a school labelled 'chav' by the local newspapers. Her befriend Carrie is madly in love with a local boy but Shitz totally is NOT in love with his mate. As she watches her sister grow up she realised that there is more to life than being a stereotype and thinks maybe she should get her act together.

I have no idea why I read this book before. Maybe it was because I went through a 'chavvy' stage myself. I found it hard to enjoy because little things annoyed me. She kept referring majority of the characters by their whole name which I thought was unneeded. I thought the story line was a bit blah. Not much really happening. Shirz does have a great imagination though and some of the things she came out with I did find amusing but that was about it that I enjoyed. Wouldn't recommend tbh.

Girl, 15, Charming But Insane by Sue Limb

Things just doesn't seem to work out for Jess. Her boobs refuse to grow so she has to result to some embarrassing last resorts to fix the problem, her Granny has come to live with her and her mother so her room is no longer hers and the love of her life won't make a move on her. Not only that, her bestfriend Flora is the closest to a beautiful goddess you'll ever meet and her longest friend Fred starts to avoid her after a misunderstanding! Jess needs to fix things quick before things get much worse.

I loved this book. I found Jess hilarious in the way she describes situations and people. I felt for her on many occasions throughout the books and could related on so many levels. Mostly because I too have boobs that refuse to make an appearance and had friends that were miles better than me at everything! Although you can kinda predict the ending half way through that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. Would recommend.

Girl (Nearly) 16: Absolute Torture by Sue Limb

Just like My Now or Never Diary I won't right a description in case of spoilers.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as the last. I felt like the whole book was kind of a downer. Jess was so negative majority of the time. I know that was to go with the story line but even the plot didn't engage me. I guess I was hoping for a bit more drama. Would recommend reading the first one more than this one.

I sense a theme going on that teenage Jasmine seems to enjoy. All struggle with the size of their boobs, brown hair, had gorgeous friends and hopeless with boys. Pretty much describes me back then lol. I really enjoyed reading these books back and still have a load more to get through!

What books did you read as a teenager?
